Is it possible to walk into a dental office with terrible teeth
and walk out with a whole new set of beautiful teeth held in place by implants?
Is that even safe? The answer is YES! However, many things have to line up
correctly in order for this to be done safely and predictably.
Implants have made it possible to replace missing teeth and for
them to function almost like your own teeth. Now, I am not an advocate in
taking all your teeth out and to replace them with implants! Having your own
teeth is still your best option. However, sometimes we find ourselves in a
situation where most of our teeth cannot be saved and are actually a health
hazard because of the infections present. At this time, we have no choice but
to remove them.
Now, walking around toothless is no fun. For most people,
dentures or false teeth are no fun either! This is when implant supported teeth
are a god send! We extract the remaining infected teeth, place implants into
the bone and have teeth attached to them. This is one of the few scenarios when
we can place teeth on implants as soon as they have been placed in the bone.
It’s usually not as simple as that as it needs a lot of
preparation before the day. You need a good oral surgeon to ensure the surgery
is well planned out and runs smoothly. You need a dentist who does a lot of
these types of procedures to ensure the prosthesis is made correctly. Most
importantly, the surgeon and the dentist must be a great team together as it’s
the TEAM that will ensure it’s success.
