    • Everything I have had done at Premier Smile Center has been top-notch. The treatment I received was thorough, precise and extremely professional. I never felt like just another patient because they took the time to listen to my concerns. They addressed my issues and we agreed on the treatment plan together.

The staff is very friendly, warm and extremely knowledgeable. I felt relaxed and comfortable knowing I chose the right place to get the dental work I needed. Dr. Johnson is very humane and very knowledgeable, and she does amazing work. I like the friendliness and honesty of the whole practice. I was not confident with my smile, in fact I was very self conscious and rarely smiled. Premier Smile Center has changed all that. My smile is one of the things I like the most.

      Maria

    • I was terrified to receive a root canal, but I knew it had to be done. After meeting with Dr. Johnson and Dr. Bui, I felt better about the procedure. They educated me on the process. I was comfortable and had no pain—which was my biggest worry. I love coming to the office. Everyone is super friendly and knowledgeable. The doctors and staff educate you on what they are doing and why it is needed.

The dentist was a place I visited only when I desperately needed to, and now I’m in the office every few months. I don’t live near the office anymore, but as long as they’re there, I will be driving over to Fort Lauderdale. Thanks to Premier Smile Center, I now have healthy, pearly white and almost perfectly straight teeth.

      Adriana

    • When I first came to the practice, my teeth were in terrible condition. From the beginning to the end of my treatment, Dr. Johnson and her entire practice were outstanding, professional and extremely understanding of my needs. Dr. Johnson is honest and very hands-on, and the practice feels like a family and not a factory. Thanks to Dr. Johnson, I now have a great smile.

      Arthur

    • Coming to Premier Smile Center was a life-changing experience for me. Although I was a registered nurse, I had the worst teeth ever—a missing tooth, discolored teeth and a crooked smile. Dr. Johnson explained to me in detail how she could give me a beautiful smile. She and her staff have been truly supportive and non-judgmental about my teeth. Dr. Johnson is compassionate, understanding and a joy to talk to, and the staff are friendly, efficient and caring. They encouraged me to go on when I was feeling down, and now I can smile confidently.

The treatment I received has greatly increased my self-esteem. I can smile and laugh unashamedly and join into a group conversation, and not just be a passive listener. I also have better health and nutrition. It is the best investment I have ever made for myself.

      Gloria

    • Premier Smile Center has always treated me like family, and my experience as a patient of Dr. Johnson’s has been nothing but satisfactory. Dr. Johnson is brilliant, and the practice is clean, friendly and professional. Before I came to the office, the condition of my teeth was depressing. As a result of my treatment, I have more confidence and less anxiety associated with a messed-up mouth.

      Clayton

    • Before coming to Premier Smile Center, I had not been to a dentist in some time. I needed some periodontal work done, fillings and wisdom tooth extractions. What initially struck me was the warm welcome I received from the front office staff, and I had virtually no wait time before I was greeted by Dr. Johnson. She was incredibly professional and explained everything she was doing as she conducted the initial exam. She made her recommendations and scheduled a return visit to repair some fillings and pull two wisdom teeth.

What was truly amazing was that within 24 hours Dr. Johnson herself called to check on me and asked how my experience was. My wisdom tooth extractions went flawlessly, and I experienced very little bleeding and no pain during or after the procedure. Again, Dr. Johnson called me afterward to check how I was doing. I like Dr. Johnson’s warm and sincere concern for her patients, and I also like her professional staff. I am always impressed by the warm, professional nature of everyone in the office.

      Daniel

    • From the moment I arrived at Premier Smile Center over a year ago, Dr. Johnson and her entire staff have been amazing. Needless to say, anytime you have a cosmetic procedure done there will be nerves and lots of questions. Within minutes into my initial consultation, these concerns subsided. Unlike other dental practices I have been to, Dr. Johnson took her time and explained what I should expect from beginning to end with Invisalign. I continue to receive compliments on my smile every day. I love it! I have already and would recommend her again to anyone I know. A huge thank you to Dr. Johnson and the Premier Smile Center staff for making my experience fabulous!

Invisalign changes lives. People who thought they would never have straight teeth because they refused to wear metal braces have discovered that a beautiful, aligned smile is still possible with Invisalign. This innovative cosmetic dentistry treatment is an amazing alternative to orthodontics that has patients falling in love with Invisalign.

    1. The aligners are practically invisible.

One of the biggest factors that holds adults back from straightening their teeth is the thought of wearing metal brackets and wires. They can’t imagine sporting a brace-face at work or metal-mouth at a social event.

Invisalign aligners, however, are nearly invisible. No one will ever notice them on your teeth unless you point them out. Invisalign is incredibly slim, smooth, and fits snugly against your teeth so they don’t interrupt your talking or smiling.

    2. Invisalign is removable.

Unlike orthodontics where the brackets and wires are attached to the teeth until treatment is over, Invisalign is removable. You must still wear Invisalign 20 to 22 hours a day, but the aligners are taken out for meals and cleanings. Being able to take a “break” from your braces for a few minutes every day is a major perk.

    3. You can eat whatever you want.

Braces come with restrictions. Invisalign does too, but being told what you can and cannot eat is not one of them. You can still enjoy your favorite chewy, crunchy, or stringy foods. The only thing you must do is clean your teeth and aligners before joining them back together again after a meal or snack.

    4. Treatment is efficient.

A round of metal braces typically takes about two years to complete. Invisalign can be finished, on average, in about a year. Some cases take a little longer, some are shorter. Ultimately, though, the amount of time you must invest in your Invisalign is significantly reduced when compared with regular braces.

Plus, you only see your dentist every six weeks or so for a progress check-up and to collect new aligners, unlike the monthly visits to an orthodontist.

    5. You could drop a few pounds.

While no dentist would recommend Invisalign as a weight-loss solution, patients often find that they do lose a few pounds during this treatment. The aligners are in place for the majority of every day, and sometimes a snack may just not be worth the effort of removing Invisalign, so wearers choose to avoid whatever food is tempting them.

    6. Your confidence will skyrocket.

If you’ve long been self-conscious about your crooked, gapped, or overlapping teeth, Invisalign will quickly deliver noticeable results. As your smile slowly but surely evens out, your confidence will increase right along with it. You’ll want to show off your teeth, in person and in selfies, and you’ll look great doing so.

You deserve to have the best smile you can. Find out if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign. Schedule a consultation with Fort Lauderdale dentist and Premier Invisalign provider Dr. Charmaine Johnson at the Premier Smile Center. And don’t forgot to discuss how professional teeth whitening can really boost your Invisalign smile makeover.

    dental implants fort lauderdale

Dental implants have a very high survival rate. However, even though you will not get a cavity on an implant, you can still get gum disease. Bacteria on the gums that cause gingivitis attack the gums and the bone around the implant.

Unlike natural teeth, dental implants do not have ligament surrounding it. Consequently, there is direct contact between bone and implant surface.

Plaque The most notable risk factor for peri-implant disease is poor plaque control.

Previous Periodontal Disease Prospective studies have shown that patients with a history of generalized aggressive periodontitis are more susceptible to peri-implantitis.

Heavy bites Grinding and clenching cause stress on teeth and implants

Diabetes Just as periodontitis is more common in persons with diabetes, poor sugar control is also associated with peri-implant disease. There is increased inflammation in the gum tissue with patients with diabetes. In addition, the blood vessels in the gum tissue constrict more and there is poor blood supply.

Smoking Smoking causes the blood vessels in the gum and bone to constrict and reduce the blood supply to the tissues.

Toothbrushes In general, electro-mechanical toothbrushes have been shown to be more effective in plaque removal than manual toothbrushes.

Mouthwashes There is robust evidence that mouthwash formulations containing chlorhexidine and essential oils have statistically significant antiplaque and antigingivitis activity.42 The same meta-analysis also concluded that the anti-plaque and anti-gingivitis effects of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) mouthwashes are formulation- dependent.

    root canal procedure fort lauderdale

    A Root Canal Treats Pain

Root canals are performed to save teeth. In the United States, they save an estimated 24 million teeth every year. The tooth is covered by hard material but it contains living tissue at its centre called the pulp. The pulp contains numerous nerve endings and blood vessels.

When you get a cavity, it eats into the hard outer enamel of the tooth and reaches the pulp or nerve tissue. The nerve tissue starts to die and rot away. This is when you feel pain to hot, cold, or even a throbbing pain at night. Eventually an abscess forms.

The infected tissue must be removed and this is called a root canal treatment. You will likely be able keep your natural tooth for the rest of your life after this. Damaged pulp is removed, the canals are disinfected and replaced with a filler. Most of the time a crown is placed over the tooth to protect it while chewing. You will be able to resume your everyday oral habits, such as chewing, smiling, brushing and flossing.

The pain during a root canal treatment depends upon the following factors:

    • Was an adequate amount of local anaesthetic (LA) administered.
    • Was the technique of giving LA properly done to block the nerve carrying the pain sensations.

Thus almost all patients do not feel pain during the procedure. We always ensure you are adequately numb and will add as much anesthetic as you need to get you numb. When patients tell me they are scared because of the pain from root canals, I have to tell you it’s because of the above two points. Many dentists want to just get going with the procedure and the patient may not be numb enough.

For a few days after the treatment, you may have some pain and sensitivity. We normally recommend over-the- counter pain relievers like aspirin or ibuprofen, even if you have no pain as this helps with the inflammation. Dr. Bui, our root canal specialist, will ensure you are taken care of in the best way possible.

dental crown care fort lauderdale dentist

While a tooth with a dental crown does not require any special care, remember that simply because a tooth is crowned does not mean the tooth is protected from decay or gum disease. Therefore, continue to follow good oral hygiene practices, including brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing daily — especially around the crown area where the gum meets the tooth — and rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash at least once a day.

    dental filling fort lauderdale dentist

You’re eating a piece of food and all of a sudden you notice your dental filling came out. Has this happened to you or do you know someone who this has happened to?

There are a couple of reasons why this can happen and we will run through a few reasons:

    1. Old fillings:  A dental filling may last many years; however, they will eventually need to be replaced due to the constant “beating” your teeth take from eating, drinking, grinding, and clenching.  Dependent on the type of material filling you have, we can usually determine how long the filling will last.  It was common in the past to place amalgam (silver) fillings due to their longevity; however, due to the mechanical retention property, silver fillings can lead to hairline fractures in your teeth over time and eventually the loss of the filling and/or cracked teeth.  This is why it’s best to have fillings examined regularly, so that problems like these can be detected early.
    2. Decay: Over time fillings may wear away or crack and cause small gaps between the filling and the tooth that allow for an entry point for bacteria.  Bacteria that naturally forms in the mouth may find its way through this “open seal”. Therefore, decay may develop around and beneath the margin of the filling, further weakening the filling and the tooth.  Sometimes the filling will fall out due to this reason.  When this happens, it is important to treat the tooth right away before more extensive treatment is needed.  Do NOT wait until you feel pain.

It is important to keep up with your routine visits to the dentist, so that we can work together to be proactive and avoid any “lost fillings” in the future.

When it comes to replacing a missing tooth, both a dental implant and bridge are great options however, we want to discuss the differences between the two.

A dental implant is a permanent titanium screw placed in your jaw that acts as the “root” of your tooth and anchors the replacement tooth in place.  The major advantage is that because it mimics a natural tooth, it manages to maintain the bone and tissue and preserve the area in a similar fashion.  They act like natural teeth, so you can bite and chew with confidence.

Implants don’t require any special treatment either for cleaning.  Simply brush and floss as normal to keep the implants clean and healthy.  The potential drawback is the timespan of the procedure as after the implant is surgically placed, it requires three months to heal prior to placing your final crown.  During this time, a temporary cap is placed to protect the implant.

A dental bridge replaces your missing tooth by anchoring a replacement tooth to your natural teeth on either side of the space for support.  The primary advantage is the timespan of the procedure as it can be completed in a couple of weeks.  However, the disadvantage is that it requires removing tooth structure of the neighboring teeth that may otherwise be in healthy condition.  It also does not protect the bone structure of the missing tooth and therefore you’re at more risk for loss of bone in that area over time.  Dental bridges also require high maintenance to keep clean, using a special floss threader frequently to get beneath the bridge and remove debris and bacteria.

Other factors such as health history, presence of adequate bone etc. must be taken into account and a proper exam is needed to decide which option is best for you and your unique needs.

    red wine stain veneers

Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant; however, the bonding cement and your natural teeth are not.  So when consuming foods or drinks that stain, you may notice your adjacent natural teeth start to look darker than your bright veneers, or maybe even the margins between your teeth look a little darker.

You want to avoid this problem by limiting the following and/or brushing and flossing right after consuming:

    • Coffee
    • Red wine / grape juice
    • Dark fruits
    • Tumeric / Curry

One way to minimize staining is by using a straw when drinking beverages that are more likely to stain your teeth. You will also want to floss or use a waterpik daily to clean between your teeth to avoid food staining at the margins.

For more tips, read our previous blog post on “5 Problems Porcelain Veneers Can Fix”.

    Fort Lauderdale Micro Thin Veneers

Micro-thin veneers are a revolutionary approach to improving cracked and chipped teeth. Veneers are thin white shells that are designed to cover up imperfections in your smile. Unlike regular dental veneers, micro-thin veneers don’t require the removal of healthy tooth enamel in order to restore your teeth. The material used is bonded directly to the teeth to improve their appearance. Along with repairing damage, veneers can also increase the size of your teeth or make your teeth appear straight.

Micro-thin veneers are a fantastic cosmetic solution for those who aren’t confident in their smile. Patients who have elected for this procedure have noticed vast improvements in their everyday life. Not only are they more confident, but they also find themselves smiling more in pictures and with friends. Talk to our team to determine if this cosmetic dental procedure is right for your smile.

Micro-thin veneers may be suitable for adults and adolescents seeking to effectively address several cosmetic dental conditions, including:

    • Chipped or cracked teeth
    • Very slightly discolored or stained teeth
    • Gaps or spaces (diastemas) between teeth
    • Misshapen, fanged or pointy and slightly misaligned teeth
    • Slightly crowded teeth
    • Worn teeth
    • Small teeth
    • Enhancing an already attractive smile into a “Hollywood” smile with a smile makeover

There are several micro-thin veneer options – including Lumineers, Durathin and Vivaneers, among others. It is important to note that Lumineers – the most heavily marketed – or other micro-thin veneers are not the only (or most appropriate) cosmetic dentistry alternative for every case of discolored, crooked, chipped, misaligned or otherwise misshapen teeth. For example, while veneers are often called “instant orthodontics” and a viable option for slightly crooked teeth, they are not recommended for severely misaligned teeth. In such instances – despite the longer treatment time – your dentist might recommend braces or clear aligners such as Invisalign. Additionally, if a whiter, brighter smile is your goal, your dentist may recommend an in office, take home or a combination of these tooth-whitening treatments.

Give your smile a confidence boost. Enjoy looking better and feeling better than you ever have. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Charmain Johnson in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to learn more.
