Dr. Johnson with her patients.

For almost 20 years, all my experiences with dentists have been traumatizing, horribly painful, and coldly impersonal. Days before my dental appointment, I would begin to feel the anxiety building and my stomach twisting. I’d toss and turn all night long, and the trip to the office left me hoping something would happen so I’d have a reason to cancel or postpone the appointment. Eventually, I stopped going because of stress.

For almost 15 years, I stuck my head in the sand and denied the problems that I knew were developing with my teeth. Sadly, I couldn’t take the discomfort anymore and began a search for a dentist. Unfortunately, because of insurance cost, most of my friends and co-workers had discontinued their dental coverage, or they just didn’t see a dentist either.

I began my search through my insurer and some websites, before I found Dr. Johnson. From the first phone call, I knew this office was different and unlike any dental office I had ever experienced. My first visit with Dr. Johnson was different, too, because she not only talked to me, but listened, too, as I explained the horrible encounters I’d experienced. She was genuinely concerned that I felt comfortable at all times. Everything would be discussed and planned, and I would have full information before my procedure was begun. Again, this was unlike anything I had experienced, and I was thrilled.

One by one, every new face that would come into the room would introduce themselves. Visit after visit, I found myself looking forward to seeing everyone and not stressed about the dental work at hand. As I became more and more relaxed, the laughter soon followed and flowed freely. I had finally found a dental office that treated the whole person, not just the teeth. I could feel that they wanted the best for me, and they were working with me to get there. I was valued.

To everyone, I can’t say thank you enough. And Kenneth, I am so glad you answered the phone when I called the first time and said that you all like “big chickens,” like me. You helped get me over the most difficult hurdle – getting in the door. Thank you,

My front tooth was broken when I was 12 years old. My smile has not been the same…until now! I am 41 years old this year and, thanks to Dr. Charmaine Johnson and her wonderfully accommodating staff, I now have the smile that I believe God intended for me. I have had a cap over my front tooth that didn’t quite blend, since it was not only bigger than my other front tooth, but also somewhat discolored. Dr. Johnson reassured me every step of the way and was incredibly patient in dealing with my worries and fears that perhaps I had made a mistake! I am glad she did. I now have two beautiful matching front teeth that complete my smile for the first time since I was 12. I will always be grateful for her patience, confidence and skill in her profession.

This is just a ‘thank-you note.’ My mother, Anne Lester, came to you because I had a toothache and found your ad in the phone book. I also wanted to find a DDS for her. We found you and are lucky to have found you. Unlike most dentists, you didn’t try to sell her a new bridge. Instead you crowned the decayed tooth, after cleaning it and the bridge and replacing it. You are a good woman and are a good dentist, as you know. But, it’s OK to hear it once in a while, from one of your patients.

Congratulations! After 14 years of being terrified of dentists, I visited your office. I entered your office and cried through the first visit (even though you and your staff were beyond wonderful). I managed to come back again for a cleaning and a filling and then back again yesterday. Thanks to you, my fear of dentistry has been conquered. Not only are you and your staff caring, professional, and talented, but I have yet to wait more than 2 minutes once I entered your office. You have shown that you value me, my time, and quality dental care. I am looking forward to (well, at least know that I will be able to tolerate) many more visits to your office. Dear Charmaine (Dr. Johnson),

I need to let you know how special what you did today was, and how much it meant to my son, J.

I had been told so many different things by different dentists. For a total non-professional, unscientific person like myself, I was at a complete loss as to what to believe.

In any event, J. appeared, on the surface, not to be too concerned about his teeth, and, as someone popular with lots of friends, he was not too focused on his appearance. I guess I just forgot what a great son I have. He was bothered by his teeth, but as usual did not want to make an issue of his problems. He came home today from your office, elated. He is just so happy with the process. I have a feeling that all the science behind it thrills him as much as the thought of the end result. He spent forever this afternoon discussing it all, from the computer images, to the teeth drilling and filling.

I feel so blessed to have such a wonderful dentist and friend as you. Just your honesty and integrity gives me a great sense of comfort and trust in what you do and advise. And trust and integrity has been one of the hardest things to find here. I hope that you would ask for our help if there is anything we could do for you. Please do not hesitate to let us know. I would feel so much better if I could give something back to you.

Nathaniel Branden once said, “There is overwhelming evidence that the higher the level of self-esteem, the more likely one will be to treat others with respect, kindness, and generosity.” My wish is that, one day, my children will have a level of self-esteem equal to yours, so they will open their hearts to others in the same way you have done.

Well, where do I begin? I just love coming to Dr. Johnson’s office because it is a pleasant environment. The staff is awesome, and I feel very relaxed, even with not being a huge dentist fan. I actually look forward to my appointments.

When Dr. Johnson explained the different methods of straightening my teeth, Invisalign sounded almost too good to be true: relatively short-term, non-invasive, and (the best part) no one can see them! Because of the state of my teeth, I was surprised when Dr. Johnson said I was an ideal candidate. I often regretted not getting braces in my youth, but as an adult, I felt it was too late to correct my mess of a mouth. Not so…. The entire process, including the molds and preparation work, took less than 9 months. In fact, I received my first set of trays in June, 2010, and finished the process entirely in January, 2011! And the result? Better than I could have imagined! I am now proud to smile and show my teeth – something I seldom did prior. Previously, I had been crowned “the king of the closed-mouth smile!” No More…..
