Dental Crowns Fort Lauderdale
A crown is a custom-made porcelain cap that is placed over a tooth that has been reduced and prepared for the crown.
Crowns may be used to restore a tooth in shape and function when a large portion has had to be removed due to advanced decay or when the tooth is cracked. An existing filling that is in danger of loosening or cracking the tooth may be covered with a crown. For aesthetic purposes, a crown may cover discolored or stained teeth. Finally, crowns are attached to dental implants and used to anchor each end of dental bridges.
How Dental Crowns are Made
A mold of the existing tooth is made and sent to a trusted dental lab, where they produce a custom crown. In some cases, a temporary crown stands in until the permanent crown is ready. The permanent crown is then cemented into place.
At Premier Smile Center in Fort Lauderdale, we place crowns manufactured from these materials:
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM)
- Lava (our preferred brand)
Caring For Your Crowns
Crowns can last a very long time, especially if you take care of them. As with all your teeth, it is very important to floss around the crown to prevent plaque from collecting at the base.
Be careful about eating hard substances, such as ice or hard candy, because biting down hard on such things can damage your crown, which does not have as much resistance to bite pressure as your other teeth do.
